It will be great to start off by saying, you need to be prepared to be broke sometimes.
No! I am not always broke! Freelancing is just a business that involves risk taking just as well as every normal sole business is. Asides from the obvious comforts of working from home, getting invites to parties by your clients, maybe even getting free products, there are some things you need to know before jumping into it.
Whether you are a blogger, illustrator, designer, animator, introvert, pastor, photographer….whatever really, you will need to learn people skills. It goes a long way. I have worked with people I initially respected and by the end of the project, I had all sorts of negative vibes spilling from them. This will happen because humans in general are not perfect. It is always important to be professional and try to end all projects with smiles….to the most you can.
Sometimes, your emails will be full of subscriptions and newsletters because guess what?? No one else is emailing you. Lol! I advise that when these sad times come, give yourself a hug and look back on the projects you’ve worked on. Evaluate how you could do better and maybe start working on personal projects that will make you better than your last work.
There will be collaborations that won’t pay off. Lol! And projects you wish you had never done. But because I am a little religious, I will like to tell you that “All things work together for good, for those that love God”. Don’t regret, just move on.
Rebrand yourself Sir! or Ma! Yes! You should be a continuous work in progress……But don’t be too rash with your rebranding. I have made many mistakes and lost many jobs because of my “harsh” rebranding. Be organic, its good. Let people see how you’ve grown.
Have a contract because men are scum! and women too! Lol! Get that shit signed before doing any project.
You know your strengths, so if you take on a project you can’t really do, be ready to spend more time on it to make sure the client is more than happy, in the end, you too will be happy or just say you can’t do it. Lol!
Thats all folks!! Hehe!
